Artist: Joel GraesserWork Date/Period: 2004
Description: Joel was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and spent his formative years in America's industrial heartland. He received his undergraduate degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and went to Dekalb to complete his graduate studies at Northern Illinois University. Joel's use of geometry, steel, and space has strong connections to David Smith, Alexander Calder and Mark di Suvero, as well as links to the early 20th century work of Russian artists: Naum Gabo, Ivan Puni, and Aleksandr Rodchenko. Shortly after completing his studies, Joel was invited to become an Artist-in-Residence at Galerie Kremer in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. This led to a solo exhibition at the Museum Gelsenkrichen-Buer. Over the next several years Joel traveled widely, his principal activity being the production of art. In addition to stainless steel, Joel has worked in wood, concrete, ice, and snow. He has received numerous awards, public and private commissions, and has been the sole U.S. representative in over twenty international sculpture symposia. His works are on permanent public exhibition in eleven countries including: Puustelli Art Center, Kemijärvi, Finland; Museum Gelsenkirchen, Gelsenkirchen-Buer, Germany; City of Resistencia, Chaco, Argentina; the municipality of Højer, Denmark; and the City of Cuautitlan Izcalli, Mexico.
