"Two alumni from the Freelance Cafe and Xaviars at Piermont have opened what is quite possibly Haverstraw's first destination restaurant: Union Restaurant and Bar Latino. David Martinez, the chef, and Paulo Feteira, the maitre d'hotel, will surely draw curious diners in with their pedigrees: together they have more than 20 years of experience working for chef Peter X. Kelly. But it's the food and the gracious service that will keep them coming back.
Martinez describes his cooking as "American cuisine with a Latino twist." Now if that sends you running scared of the mid-'90s and the Nuevo Latino trend - don't fret. What he is doing in the kitchen is modern, even if the setting is not. The restaurant's decor hasn't changed much since it was Gallitos, serving Mexican food."
